Recently I went to WalMart to pick up my layaway and was greeted with a very large sign announcing that the corporate big-wigs had decided to cancel Layaway after Christmas because:
1.) There are other means of non-credit payment plans such as gift cards, etc.
2.) Lack of interest from the customers
For those of us who are trying desperately to stay out of debt and NOT use a credit card, what "other means of non-credit payment plans" are out there? Gift cards are just that . . . gifts that someone else gives you. What if no one gives you a card? Layway was a helpful means of budgeting and planning for the things we needed.
Then I went into the sewing department and was told that department is also being taken away. With the only other options for fabric and sewing needs being higher end stores, my options are quite limited now.
These two moves by WalMart have proved to me that they care little for the very working class customer who has made them what they are today and there are no reasons for me to shop at WalMart from now on.
I am not sure what they are trying to accomplish by these moves other than pushing away the average shopper. Be careful what you wish for.
