We are ‘not so proud owners’ of the Godrej Make Pentacool GF-28 Frostfree 260 Ltr refrigerator. Encouraged by the 23 years of trouble free performance of a Goderej Fridge owned by us back-home we bought the GF-28 with a view that we were getting the best one in the market and a fridge that was among the costliest ones. But my misconception was only short lived, both regarding the quality of product and the dealer’s response. We bought the piece on 11-04-03 from M/s Fairdeal in Jammu. In less than a year of purchase, we felt that cooling was not proper but we could not detect it. We live in a place that is generally cold until April. So it was only by the start of April’04 that we detected the problem. We contacted the dealer on 02-04-04 over telephone, and gave a personal visit to him on 08-04-04, that is very well before the expiry of one year warranty period. We also told him that we will be off for some urgent work in a few days and he must send the service engineer right away that so that repair can be done within the warranty period. But he did not co-operate and sent the person only in the end April. We had to shell out Rs. 1000/- for the defective fan motor which could otherwise have been covered under the warranty. Still, hoping that this must be the only one and the last problem we did not give much thought. But once again, a year later, the main fuse of the Unit went off. We again called the dealer but he told us that he had surrendered the agency and referred us to a service centre in Udhampur. After repeated calls to the centre the service personnel finally arrived and charged Rs. 300 for the repair. This was followed by periodic breakdowns, every time due to a different problem, within the next 1 year. A temperature fuse went off in August’06, charges Rs. 430, a metal wire thermostat blew off, charges Rs. 525. We did not contact the Head offices of the Company thinking that perhaps this is the last problem. But even now, the problems are persisting. Recently only, once again the fan is not working and may be the fan motor of the temperature wire fuse has blown off. We are still to find and contact the nearest service centre. Due to all these, we have spent a substantial percentage of the amount spent on original purchase on the repair works and faced all that agony of having a defective fridge and the subsequent repairs. The frequent occurrence of breakdowns and that too each time on a different part suggests that the whole piece is defective. We feel like throwing the item out on the street and warn one all not to buy a refrigerator of ‘Godrej Make’. But still we are writing this piece of first and the last letter in hope that there might be some traces left of what Godrej was a decade or two back.
