My name is Saroj Nanda and I am from New York.

Recently, I had purchased through Sify Mall 4 Pantaloon Gift Certificates of Rs.500.00 each (Total Rs.2000.00) for my niece in Kolkata on the occasion of her birthday. The order number was s000392376m. Sify sent the certificates late and only on my request Blue Dart had them delivered as a special case at about 9 PM on July 18, 2006. My US Dollar Account was debited with $43.57 towards the cost of the certificates.

When my niece went to the Pantaloon shop at 22 Camac Street, Kolkata, the shop refused to accept the Gift Certifiactes saying the Gift Certificates are "discounted" and are NOT valid during sale. I thought the Gift Certificates are equivalent to cash and no restriction applies to them. At least in their website, Sify has not mentioned of any restriction about the gift certificates. The Sify website says as follows:

"Sifymall provides an extensive array of Gift Certificates, redeemable at some of the best stores across the top cities of India. More importantly, our Gift Certificates also give the privileged recipient, the freedom of choice! That makes it a double gifting experience for you. "

When my small niece approached the cashier with the items slected by her, she was shocked and embarrassed when the cashier refused to accept the gift certificates on the plea that those certificates were not valid. It is not that my niece was waiting for a sale. She went to the shop soon after getting the certificates.

We, her uncle and aunt, here in New York were deeply anguished to learn that our gift was no good and she had to return empty handed from Pantaloon despite gift certificates of Rs.2000.00 in her hand. When I contacted the Pantaloon Store Manager in Kolkata, I was told that Sify has provided "discounted" gift certificates and not the actual gift certificates. According to the store manager, the "discounted" gift certificates are not accepted by Pantaloon during their sale period.

I contacted Sify on July 30, 2006. After repeated follow-up through chats (You cannot contact them through the Indian toll free numbers from USA), I was told by Sify today on August 12, 2006 that we can now purchase any item from Pantaloon for which the discounted offered by Pantaloon is less that 50%. This is supposed to be a specail deal that Sify has supposedly arranged for me!!

This proves that the Gift Certificates sold by Sify are not the regular gift certificates. These gift certificates carry a lot of exclusions which Sify hides from its customers.

I think Sify is not an honest dealer. Their responses were tardy and highly unpolite.

I have gone through a lot of pain and angusih. I will never recommened any one to go to Sify Mall.

I am exploring what else I may do for the pain and anguish suffered by me and my niece.  

Solution of your complaintFirst of all an apology to my niece. Secondly, suitable comensation to her (my niece) for (a) the humiliation faced by her at the store and (b) not being able to buy her birthday gift till date.
